The Fairfield County JDRF Chapter is proud to announce that Carpenter Crew for a Cure will be our Honored Family Walk Team for this years Walk to Cure Diabetes event in Norwalk, CT.
Our personal involvement with the JDRF Fairfield County Walk began in 2004, when our son Bobby was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 4. It changed our lives, as we had to quickly learn how to manage this disease, which includes round the clock blood sugar checks, frequent insulin shots and learning how to count carbohydrates.
I still remember the exact moment when I decided I had to get involved with JDRF. It was on a car ride home from pre-school one day, about a month after Bobby’s diagnosis. Bobby asked me in a hopeful voice from the back of car: “Mommy, when will my diabetes go away?”
We immediately became involved with the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, to show our children that not only our family, but many people, including kids just like them, are working hard to find a cure for this disease. The Walk is a very inspirational way to get involved, and is a great way to meet other families also affected by type 1 diabetes. That first year, our Family Walk team was called “Bobby’s Buddies.” However, two years later, we changed the name of our Family Walk team to “Carpenter Crew for a Cure”. The reason – our daughter Isabelle was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, also at the age of 4.
This will be the 9th year that our family has been involved with the JDRF Fairfield County Walk, and with the longstanding and constant support of friends and family over the years, we can humbly acknowledge having raised over $250,000 for the cause.
Since our participation in that first walk, our family has also been involved in other aspects of the Chapter as volunteers. We have participated in the Walk Committee, Fashion Show Committee, Gala Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Corporate Sponsorship Committee and also served in the Mentoring Program for newly diagnosed families. We have also met with our Congressional Representatives to share our story, raise awareness, and lobby for government funding of this disease. Since 2010, we have had the honor of serving on the Board of Directors.
Why JDRF: Our charity of choice is JDRF. We know this organization is successful mainly due to the grassroots effort of parents like us looking to find a cure for this disease and ultimately put itself out of business. The JDRF is the #1 funder of Type 1 Diabetes research with over 80 cents of every dollar donated going directly to research.
The Fairfield County JDRF Chapter is proud to announce that Mighty T-Rex’s will be our Honored Family Walk Team for this years Walk to Cure Diabetes event in Ridgefield, CT.
“Our team captain, my son Rex was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in March 2012— after sleeping for 2 days straight. The diagnosis was a surprise— no one in our family or school has Type 1 Diabetes. The JDRF walk helped show us that we are not alone— that Diabetes affects many people in our community. Rex’s diagnosis changed our lives. We are proud to have been selected as the Honored Family Walk Team at this year’s Ridgefield Walk. We will walk again as mighty T-Rex’s and will keep fighting until there is a cure for Diabetes! Diabetes, hear us ROAR!
